Voters head to the polls to decide key primary runoffs in the Houston area and across Texas

One race involves Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, who is in a runoff with challenger David Covey.

HOUSTON — Tuesday is Election Day in Texas. Polls open at 7 a.m. for the primary runoff election, which includes several key races. One involves the Texas House speaker.

Typically, a small fraction of Texans vote during the primaries, but they will determine the winners of some of the most influential races in the state.

One big race we’re watching for the Republicans involves Texas House speaker and incumbent Dade Phelan. Phelan was forced into a runoff in Texas House District 21 by challenger David Covey.

Jarvis Johnson is going up against Molly Cook in a Democratic primary to determine who will permanently fill the Texas Senate seat left open by now-Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

Keep in mind, not all voters will have an election on their ballot. It depends on where you live and which party primary you want to vote in.

Also remember -- today is going to be another very hot day in Houston, so you may want to dress accordingly and bring water in case there’s a wait at the polls.
