League of Women Voters of Houston makes final push for voter registration

With the deadline for Texans to register to vote approaching, the League of Women Voters of Houston is working to meet people where they’re at.

HOUSTON — With the Texas voter registration deadline days away, volunteers with the Houston League of Women Voters are busy working to get more people to register.

“Going out to different places, churches, restaurants, and anywhere where you're going to find people of all types,” said volunteer Sharon Engelstein.

Volunteers like Engesltein are working to make sure they register as many eligible would-be voters as they can.

The more people will get registered, the more people we can get to the polls,” said Engelstein. “After this, I’ll focus on helping to get people to the polls. But it's the first step.”

Volunteers have been working to meet people where they’re at, including haunted houses.

“Are we going to get people to talk to us? Listen to us. Take a moment. It doesn't take long. It takes a couple of minutes to fill out the form,” said Engelstein. “Hoping that this is a place where people will engage.”

The Texas Secretary of State's office tells KHOU 11 News that 18.4 million Texans are registered to vote. The office said they’ll have an updated number several days after the deadline to register.
