HOUSTON — Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg is fighting to keep her position, but a survey from the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs reveals her primary opponent, Sean Teare, holds a substantial lead over the incumbent.
As early voting starts in the March 5 primary, the survey shows 59% of likely voters intend to vote for Teare and 21% for incumbent Ogg. Twenty percent of likely voters say they are still undecided.
Two months ago, the Harris County Democrats voted to formally admonish Ogg when her fellow party members accused Ogg of abusing her power to pursue vendettas against political opponents, among other concerns.
Both candidates answered questions at a forum hosted by the American Civil Liberties Union earlier this month.
The survey focused on Harris County voters and found that 66% of likely voters intend to cast their ballots for Colin Allred in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. The next closest candidate is Roland Gutierrez with 7% support. According to the survey, Harris County's likely Democratic primary voters will account for approximately one out of every six votes cast in the 2024 Texas Democratic primary election.
Allred also leads in a statewide survey released earlier this month.
The survey also looked at the primary for Harris County Sheriff, with 63% of likely voters saying they intend to vote for incumbent Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Five percent said they would vote for one of the three other candidates and 32% said they were undecided.
