HOUSTON — Watch for the waving American flag! That’s the message from Harris County election officials as early voting continues this week. That’s because your ballot isn’t counted until a flag pops up on the voting machine.
“I had to ask someone before I proceeded,” said voter Leonora Friend.
Friend saw reports about issues at the voting booth, both real and imagined.
“But your coverage has helped me be more diligent before you go to the last step,” said Friend.
Sonya Aston, Harris County’s administrator of elections, said that last step has been tricky for some.
“Nothing surprises me with voters,” said Aston.
She said some voters routinely forget to hit the “cast ballot” button one final time; that means they walk away from the voting booth without it registering.
“Since the ballot is so long, you may have to hit it two or three times to get to the end,” said Aston. “So, you want to get through until you see a blue screen with a waving American flag.”
The Harris County Clerk’s office tracks the number of so-called “canceled booths.” Those are the result of incorrectly cast ballots and other issues.
As of October 30th, the number of “canceled booths” totals 719 this early voting period.
“If someone walks away without hitting the “cast ballot” button, our people are instructed not to hit it for the voter,” said Aston. “Because you’re basically voting for that person.”
Friend said fellow voters should be observant to endure their voice is heard.
“We have to make sure it’s done correctly and equal to all,” said Friend.
Again, the key is waiting for that waving American flag. Election officials also encourage you to check out a sample ballot before you vote.
