Pearland — The storms that rolled through on Tuesday serve as a reminder of the threat of flooding in and around the Houston area.
Communities like Pearland are constantly working to improve the lives of its citizens.
As Pearland continues to grow, so does the number of projects the city is working on to make sure that flooding remains under control.
Robert Upton, Director of Engineering for the City of Pearland said, “We do have some historic areas and some lower areas that are prone to it but as part of our goal is that we evaluate those and we take a look at them and we want to make sure that we start looking at addressing those.”
Also, the construction of new homes can easily be spotted in Pearland. Under a city ordinance, new development has to find ways to mitigate its own flooding.
Upton said the city follows drainage standards to help address the threat of future flooding in areas with new development.
Off of Old Alvin Road and Walnut Avenue, the rain on Tuesday stopped work on one way the city is planning to do just that.
“We’re in the midst of creating a detention basin for flows that will help the area during storm events,” Upton said.
The city is always looking at how flooding could impact residents.
“Flooding is always a unique situation that happens and so we try our best on the engineering side to be able to mitigate everything that we can and proceed from there while still maintaining quality of life for our citizens,” Upton said.
The community is always invited to weigh in on current and future projects.
