We put different foods to the test to see if locals could tell the difference between name brand and store brand grocery items.

HOUSTON — What’s the difference between Peter Pan peanut butter and Great Value peanut butter?

The price, for one, but does paying more for the name brand mean you actually get more?

“Perception is reality. In marketing, if you say something is coming from this high-end brand, very often people just think it’s better even if they’re tasting the identical product,” said Dr. Vanessa Patrick, professor of marketing at the University of Houston.

KHOU 11 News put several popular name brand products to the test against their private label store brand equivalents from Wal-Mart, Trader Joe’s, and Costco.
