Why can Republicans vote on propositions in this primary and not Democrats?

The GOP primary ballot in Texas has 13 propositions.

TEXAS, USA — If you have done some research into the ballots for this year’s primary you might have noticed there are a series of propositions on the Republican ballot and not the Democratic.

The 13 GOP propositions range from eliminating all property taxes to creating a border protection unit. All serious issues you would think voters should have a chance to weigh in on. But here’s the thing – these aren’t real propositions –  at least in the sense that these won’t become constitutional amendments.

These propositions are more like a poll. They are a chance for the party to gauge the opinions of its voters. The party can then take the results of that vote to help create their platform and decide what should be legislative priorities in the next session.

So why don’t the Democrats have propositions on their ballot? The short answer is they chose not to. The party already has its platform online and it extends through 2024. That platform includes everything from freedom from discrimination to equal opportunity to a quality public education.
