HOUSTON — Getting out of a subscription can be tough with gyms often being the most extreme example, while joining a streaming service, or even a meditation app usually requires just a few simple clicks.
Breaking up with them can involve multiple phone calls and a lot of hoops to jump through.
When it comes to gyms, people have reported having to use a lawyer just to divorce, their workout space.
Now, the White House is proposing some big rule changes for consumers.
One would require canceling recurring payments and subscriptions to be as easy as signing up in the first place. So if it requires one click to join, it should require one click to leave.
Called "Click to Cancel," it is being praised by consumer advocates. However, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says it will cost Americans time and money.
Other proposed rule changes include making it easier for consumers to talk to an actual human.
The new guidelines would require customers to be able to reach a human operator by pressing one button.
Also, the Federal Trade Commission has officially banned fake customer reviews. It prevents businesses from using AI-generated reviews, using feedback from people who never bought the product, or buying fake followers for their social media accounts.
That last one could affect influencers who make money off social media.
