Why are airline baggage issues getting worse?

From changes in size limits to different rules for different airlines it can be a mess.

HOUSTON — Part of the problem is just figuring out what each airline charges. Some charge for checked bags. Some even charge for carry-ons and others will make you check a bag at the gate if they feel you violated the rules. All these charges really add up.

Consumer Affairs reports that U.S. airlines racked up $1.8 billion in baggage fees just in the second quarter of this year.

When it comes to carry-ons, you could be in for a rude awakening when you reach the airport. According to reports, Delta, United and American have all recently changed size limits, shaving an extra inch from the width of the bag allowed. While the changes are still new, airlines are for the most part letting you check those bags without charging an additional fee. You probably don’t want to count on that, though, so check your airline’s website and do some measuring before you head out.

It is also important to remember that some budget airlines charge you for carry-ons. Experts warn those airlines, like Frontier and Spirit, also have strict limits on the personal item you are allowed to bring with you. Consumer Affairs reports the practice of charging for carry-ons is starting to spread, with Jet Blue offering a Blue Basic Fare that does not allow a free carry-on.
