At least one more Hamilton star is planning to move on — before the year is out, at least.
On Friday, the day after creator/star Lin-Manuel Miranda confirmed he would depart the blockbuster Broadway production July 9, it was announced that Phillipa Soo — who earned one of the show's record 16 Tony nominations, for her portrayal of Miranda's character's wife, Eliza Schuyler Hamilton — will begin performances in Amélie, A New Musical December 4 at Los Angeles's Ahmanson Theatre. That run, through Jan. 15, will be followed by a Broadway engagement in 2017.
Amelie is adapted from the 2001 film that starred Audrey Tautou as a young woman in Paris. Samantha Barks, who appeared in the film adaptation of Les Misérables, played the title role when the musical premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre last year. But Soo originated the part in workshop productions of the musical.
“I am excited to step back into the shoes of this character," Soo said in statement. "She is joyous, complex and determined, in her own small way, to change the world for the better."
Ameilie features a book by Craig Lucas (Reckless, Prelude to A Kiss) and is being directed by Pam MacKinnon, who won a Tony for her searing 2012 revival of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, and was most recently represented on Broadway by David Mamet's China Doll, starring Al Pacino.
Soo's contract, like those of other Hamilton stars, also expires July 9.
