COPPELL, Texas A rental car is giving Coppell investigators new clues into the murder-suicide of the city's mayor and her daughter.
Even the key chain is offering clues.
News 8 has learned that a surveillance video taken by cameras at Vista Ridge Mall in Lewisville is being examined not by police, but by shopping center officials.
The video reportedly shows Coppell Mayor Jayne Peters returning a rental car at an Avis location in the early morning hours of July 12, the day before the bodies of Peters and her daughter were discovered at their home.
The car had been rented by the mayor on June 2 for seven days, but Avis employees said it wasn't returned for six weeks.
The bill totaling almost $1,400 was charged to Peters' city credit card. It's among the many questionable expenses Coppell officials are looking into.
It's now believed the mayor gave the rented car to her 19-year-old daughter Corinne as a high school graduation gift, failing to tell her it was a rental.
When the car was finally returned, rental officials said it was in good shape, but there was one odd thing: The keys, placed in a drop box, were missing an Avis key tag. Not only had it been removed... it was missing altogether.
Also on Tuesday, Coppell High School reached out to classmates of Corinne Peters, who police say was killed by her mother. The school offered counselors to students as this suburban community continues to deal with the loss and the questions behind these deaths.
