MISSOURI CITY, Texas - An investigation is underway to figure out whether the driver who hit a car full of young women was drunk.
The deadly crash happened around 2:45 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Highway 6 and Vicksburg Boulevard.
Cayla Simple, her college roommate and two friends were in a Honda Civic just minutes from home when Missouri City Police say a GMC Yukon blew through a red light and plowed right into Cayla's Honda Civic.
The crash killed 19-year-old Simple and sent the other three passengers to the hospital.
Cayla's mother, Saphonya Revis, found out about the accident when a family friend passed the scene.
"They noticed that the car looked familiar," Revis said, explaining that the friend then reached out to Revis' sister.
Police at the scene confirmed Revis' worst nightmare.
"Unfortunately, she didn't make it," she said.
Officers say the driver of the Yukon was also hospitalized. His blood is being tested to determine if he was drunk when he allegedly caused the crash that cut Cayla's life short.
"She was a very outspoken child. Very happy. Loving. Always had a smile on her face," Revis said.
Last year, Cayla graduated from Hightower High School, where she volunteered as an athletic trainer. She got a scholarship to follow that passion at Navarro College in Corsicana last fall.
"She was home for spring break," explained Revis. "She was actually supposed to be leaving to go back to school today."
Instead of sending her only child back to college, the Missouri City mother is now forced to plan Cayla's funeral.
"I'm going to miss her," said Revis. "She was my best friend."
