Woman found dead inside Third Ward apartment after HFD responds to reported fire

While inside, firefighters found a woman surrounded by soot and smoke. According to HFD Deputy Chief J. Pennington, the fire was already out.

HOUSTON — A woman was found dead inside an apartment following reports of a fire Sunday morning, according to the Houston Fire Department.

It happened at an apartment complex on Truxillo Street near Texas Southern University in Houston's Third Ward.

HFD Deputy Chief J. Pennington said they responded to an apartment fire with possible people trapped around 11:56 a.m. When they got there, they didn't find signs of fire or smoke from the exterior.

While inside, firefighters found soot and smoke. It appears the fire was already out, according to Pennington. 

Pennington said a woman was pulled out from inside the apartment. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was inside the apartment. Smoke detectors were working and going off, according to Pennington.

Arson, Houston Police Homicide and Crime Scene Units are investigating. The medical examiner's office was also at the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
