What's causing all this haze in Houston?

Smoky haze over Houston early Monday, Sept. 14, 2015
It's that time of year, again! The time to burn crops in Mexico. Agricultural burning is an annual activity that can send plumes of smoke thousands of miles. In our case, a southeast flow originating in the Caribbean is picking up smoke emitted from the Yucatan Peninsula, and ushering it our way, hazing-up our skies. This haze will likely be with us through tomorrow, before a cold front will sweep it out of the region for deep, blue skies by Sunday afternoon and Monday.
