Admittedly, before I walked into Boost Pilates’ River Oaks location, I didn’t know there were any differences between yoga and Pilates. Turns out, there are. The biggest one comes in the form of Balanced Body Allegro 2 reformers. Owner Karen Hunt stocked her studio with 12 of the all-purpose machines, which have springs on one end and pulleys on the other.
“Fitness Pilates is all about getting both a strength workout and a bit of cardio. You’re going to work your core and balance,” Hunt says. “It’s an all-over, head-to-toe workout. Every part of you will be challenged.”
The class I take is led by instructor Nicole Hoffman, who started doing Pilates about four years ago.
“It makes huge changes in your body, but at the same time, it’s low impact,” explains Hoffman.

She promises to “hit it all” during the workout and she delivers. As a class, we move all over the reformer, working our core, our legs and our arms.
“It’s just a really unique workout and I feel like it’s something you can’t get at a typical gym. It’s a fun class. You don’t realize how fast the class goes by,” says student Kailey Graybill, who’s been coming to Boost Pilates for about six months. “It can be intimidating because of the machine, but once you come in and have a great instructor who can lead you through all the different exercises, you just feel so accomplished leaving.”
The studio has two locations, one in River Oaks and one in West U. It’s offering a new member deal: six classes for $60. For more information, click here.
