COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Students at Texas A&M University gathered Thursday to remember the Baytown freshman who died early Sunday morning after falling from her dorm on campus.
Britney Romero was a new member of the Mexican Students Association on Texas A&M's campus. The group organized Thursday's vigil and said they don't know how something like this could've happened to Romero.
“It’s tough. It’s very tough news,” said MSA’s president Fabian Gonzalez.
The students had to procure hundreds of pink balloons, write statements of grief and send invites for Thursday night’s event.
“No one expects something like that to happen,” Gonzalez said.
Early Sunday morning, Romero’s body was found in the courtyard of the Dunn Hall dormitory. University officials haven't shared any details on what they think might have led to Romeo's death -- only saying it appears she fell from the third-floor balcony.
“She was a super happy and bright person and all of her friends would describe her the same way,” Perez Paredes said.
For those who knew her personally, they find it hard to believe this is something Britney may have done willingly.
“She was not that type of person, someone to do something like that,” Gonzalez said.
The group read a letter from Britney’s roommate Thursday night who had to return home after the incident.
Amid their grief, students aren’t willing to make any conclusions about what may have happened to their friend and fellow student.
“We don’t want to make any assumptions or anything like that so we’re just waiting to see what, what they tell us,” Gonzalez said.
