VERIFY: Can Presidents keep gifts from foreign governments?

A KHOU 11 viewer asked us to verify if Presidents are allowed to keep gifts from foreign governments or if those gifts become U.S. government property.

After Russian leader Vladimir Putin gave President Trump a World Cup soccer ball at a recent news conference in Finland, a KHOU 11 viewer asked us if Trump was allowed to keep the ball.

Our Verify team found a report by the Congressional Research Service that says gifts from foreign governments are not property of the President.

They are considered property of the United States and are handed over to the National Archives.

Once the President is out of office, the collection moves to a presidential library.

However, if a President does want to keep a particular gift, he can buy it back at market value.

So we can Verify that no, Presidents cannot keep gifts from foreign power.
