Sculpture on UH campus targeted by vandal on morning Beryl hit

A person was seen on surveillance video damaging a sculpture entitled "Witness," by Shahzia Sikander, which sits in the middle of the UH campus.

HOUSTON — A piece of art on the University of Houston campus was vandalized at a time when Houstonians were most vulnerable.

On the day Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Southeast Texas, a person was seen on surveillance video damaging a sculpture entitled "Witness," by Shahzia Sikander. The sculpture sits in the Cullen Family Plaza in the middle of the UH campus.

University officials said the incident is being investigated by police.

"We understand the strong feelings of the affected community and will work with the artist to determine the next steps and at this time there is a tarp over the piece to protect it temporarily from further damage, not to obscure the piece from view," the university said.

In a statement, university officials went on to say they were planning to work with Sikander next week to figure out how to move forward.
