For sale: 2-bedroom treehouse north of downtown Houston

The unique home wraps around a 200-year-old pecan tree in the First Ward Arts District.

HOUSTON — A Houston home that hit the market this week is one-of-a-kind but definitely not for everyone.

The ultra-modern two-bedroom, three-bathroom treehouse sits 13 feet above the ground in the First Ward Arts District, north of downtown Houston.

The unique home wraps around a 200-year-old pecan tree on a 5,000-square-foot lot on Edwards St. near the I-10/North Freeway interchange.

The 2,200-square-foot, u-shaped structure is covered in a rusted steel rain screen with two wings on either side of the tree.

Each bedroom has an ensuite bath.

It has a chef's kitchen with Miele appliances, porcelain tile imported from Spain throughout the home and Cararra marble and high-end fixtures in the spa-like bath.

Look out the large side windows and you'll see some unusually quiet neighbors, the giant busts known as "Mount Rush Hour" by Houston artist David Adickes. The 18-foot-tall sculptures of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln share the space with Texas heroes Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin.

From the treehouse's front windows, you can see cars whizzing by on the freeway or a more serene setting of trees from the back.

"There's always activity in one direction. Then when you look across to the almost pastoral side, it’s just like you’re looking out in the country," designer and builder Scott Strasser said in a video released with the listing.

"It is a piece of art, it is a livable piece of art," realtor Ellen Krantz said.

The home can be yours for a mere $1.75 million. (Horses in the photo below are not included.)
