HOUSTON – Three people were injured in an apartment fire early Saturday morning in southeast Houston.

Firefighters responded to the scene at the Southmore Place Apartments in the 3700 block of Southmore Boulevard around 2 a.m. Saturday. They found heavy flames coming from the front of the building on the second floor.

One woman and her 13-year-old son suffered smoke inhalation. Another woman suffered minor burns to her face and hands. Officials say two of the three people injured were transported to a nearby hospital.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Officials say four of the 12 units in the complex were completely burned, and another four had water and smoke damage. They believe the fire may have been set intentionally, as it appears some type of accelerant was poured on the front doors of several units.

Houston Fire Department’s arson bureau is investigating the cause of the fire.
