WYLIE, Texas -- At Wylie High School, nearly three dozen classmates had gathered to share in the pain of losing a classmate.
Ibrahim Malik, 18, was going to be a senior at Wylie High School in the fall. On Wednesday, he and five friends had jumped off a train trestle at Lake Lavon.
Ibrahim did not come back up.
"I just froze right there," Omair Siddiqi said. "I was just in shock."
Siddiqi says he remembers being in the same Quran classes with Malik.
He says Malik "was always willing to share his knowledge" with those younger than him. He says Malik would even lead prayers at the mosque.
Malik's disappearance would set off a search and rescue that lasted hours. It would last into the night before his body was found very early Thursday morning.
Malik's funeral brought thousands of people to a mosque in Plano.
"It was a great loss for the community, and it's a great loss for the family," said Junaid Din, president of the East Plano Islamic Center.
Omair Siddiqi says the 18-year-old enjoyed life. He also says Malik jumping into Lavon Lake doesn't surprise him.
"To have fun, he would do stuff like that -- be adventurous," Siddiqi said.
Wylie High School held the gathering Thursday night so counselors can meet with students in case they needed to talk through the grief.
"It hasn't really hit us that hard, but I think in the coming days we will really feel it," Omair said.
They may also feel it when school starts up again and Ibrahim Malik isn't there to start his senior year.
