GALVESTON, Texas — The USS Texas may be getting closer to finding its permanent home.
The battleship has been in Galveston since September of last year as it undergoes millions of dollars of much-needed repairs.
The Galveston Wharves Board has approved port staff to put together a lease that would keep the battleship in Galveston.
This comes just months after reports surfaced that a deal that was in the works had hit a snag.
The Battleship Texas Foundation would still need to get permits from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers and an agreement with the Galveston-Texas City Pilots.
Port of Galveston CEO Rodger Rees said the lease will allow the foundation to get to work on obtaining those permits.
"The spot that we're looking at is on Pier 21, to the east side of Pier 21. So, that will be right here, right off the strand so there can be a nice flow of tourism and it can become part of the Galveston experience," Rees said.
