Former North Shore assistant coach banned 3 years for UIL recruiting violations | Head coach gets 2-game suspension for lack of oversight

North Shore head coach Willie Gaston and former assistant coach Andrew Cameron were disciplined by the UIL's executive committee.

HOUSTON — Two Houston-area high school football coaches were among those whom the University Interscholastic League disciplined for rules violations.

The suspensions for Galena Park North Shore High School Head Football Coach Willie Gaston and his former assistant were announced by the UIL State Executive Committee on Wednesday.

Gaston was given a two-game suspension that will be served at the beginning of district play during the upcoming football season. The punishment was "for lack of proper oversight of his coaching staff." A member of Gaston's coaching staff tried to recruit student-athletes, according to the UIL.

Former Galena Park North Shore High School Assistant Football Coach Andrew Cameron got a three-year ban from all UIL activities.

Some other suspensions were handed out around the state, including one year of probation for Round Rock Cedar Ridge High School Girls Soccer Coach Gustavo Lopez for "his ejection from a contest while on probation from a previous ejection."

Runge High School Boys Basketball Coach Aaron Escamilla's appeal was denied. He was issued one year of probation, a public reprimand and additional training.

A student-athlete from Central Texas was not granted eligibility for varsity after the committee determined that the student changed schools for athletic purposes.
