BURLESON COUNTY, Texas — UPDATE: Wednesday, August 18, 2021
The Texas Department of Public Safety released additional information Wednesday on a shooting that occurred Tuesday evening involving Burleson County Deputy John Pollock Tuesday night.
Texas DPS spokesperson Justin Ruiz confirm that at approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, the suspect of the shooting exited his home in what law enforcement assumed to be a peaceful surrender.
As officials attempted to take in the suspect, 41-year-old James Matalice Smith of Somerville, Smith fired a weapon, striking one DPS trooper in the arm. Law enforcement returned fire, striking the suspect where he was treated by the Burelson County Emergency Medical Services for life-threatening injuries. Smith was later pronounced deceased at the scene by a Burleson County Judge.
Chief Deputy Pollock is currently at CHI ST. Joseph Regional Hospital where he remains in stable condition. The trooper who the suspected injured was transported to CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan for non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
FM 60 has since reopened.

The standoff in Burleson County has ended, according to Texas DPS and the Burleson County Office of Emergency Management. However, FM 60 remains closed at this time so authorities can continue to investigate the scene.
Chief Deputy John Pollock was taken to St. Joseph Health in Bryan Tuesday night. An updated condition was not immediately known.
Snook ISD Superintendent Brenda Krchnak said Snook ISD will have school as scheduled today, however, due to the closure on FM 60 there will not be bus service to Centerline. The bus will be detoured at FM 3058.

Several law enforcement agencies are on the scene of a shooting involving a Burleson County Deputy Tuesday night.
Texas DPS spokesperson Sgt. Justin Ruiz confirmed the deputy was shot trying to serve a warrant to a person at a home just west of Snook on FM 60. The deputy was taken to a hospital in Brazos County, their condition is not known at this time.
Authorities said the shooting suspect has now refused to come outside and cooperate with law enforcement. They have not identified the person or what the warrant was for.
FM 60 is closed west of Snook and east of Highway 36.
The shooting happened just before 7 p.m.
