HOUSTON — Months after losing her reelection bid in the Democratic primary, Texas State Rep. Shawn Thierry of Houston announced she's switching political parties.
The former Democrat cited progressive policies that she "cannot, in good conscience, support," like access to gender-affirming care for minors or allowing transgender people in women's sports.
In a lengthy statement on X, Thierry wrote that she was raised and has voted as a Democrat her whole life but said she no longer recognizes the party. She went on to praise the Republican Party's economic and social policies, including the parental rights movement in education.
"It's the party of parents, believing that they have the fundamental right to determine the best educational environments for their children to learn, grow, and succeed," Thierry wrote in the post.
Thierry lost to Lauren Ashley Simmons in the Democratic primary.
Thierry drew headlines in May 2023 for voting against her former party in favor of SB 14, a state law that bans gender-affirming care for minors. The law went into effect on Sept. 1, 2023, and the Texas Supreme Court upheld the law in a June ruling.
The Texas Democratic Party took to X to respond to Thierry swapping sides of the aisle.
"Shawn Thierry compromised her Democratic values, betraying the constituents of House District 146, and in response, they rightfully fire her," Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said, referring to her failed reelection bid. "We're elated that Shawn Thierry has found her true community -- the hateful arms of the Republican Party of Texas."
The former Democrat got a warm welcome from Texas' top Republicans.
"Welcome to the Republican Party," Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan said on X. "I look forward to seeing the incredible work you'll do to strengthen our party and our nation."
"Proud to welcome Rep. @ShawnieT146 to the Republican Party!" Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a post on X. "Looking forward to working with Rep. Thierry to build a brighter future."
Thierry said she expects "relentless attacks, criticism, and mischaracterization," but said she will lean on her faith regardless.
"I trust that God will guide me and cover me as I step into this new chapter of my life," she said.
