DALLAS — A gun was found on the campus of William Brown Miller Elementary School Wednesday.
According to sources, a teacher found the loaded gun outside the window of the school, where a group of children, ages 9, tossed the weapon after playing with it in a bathroom.
In a letter sent out to parents later in the day, Principal Sheila Aldredge confirmed a weapon was found on the campus. According to Aldredge, several students reported seeing the gun, which led to its discovery.
"Our staff took immediate action and fortunately, no one was injured," she said.
Aldredge said the school is investigating the incident. While school officials said the gun was brought to the school by a student, they haven't disclosed how the student got the weapon or if he or she will be disciplined.
"If you have firearms in your home, I urge you to make sure they are kept locked away in a safe location out of your children's reach," Aldredge said. "I also encourage you to take this time to talk to your children about gun safety."
Parents outside the school Wednesday afternoon said news of the weapon on campus has spurred concern.
"How does a parent allow a child to bring a gun to school?" said one parent. "They need to pay more attention to what their children are doing."
In Texas, a child under the age of 10 cannot be charged with a felony.
