GARLAND, Texas -- The city of Garland says it's exploring the possibility of creating a permanent memorial to honor the nine travelers killed in December 2015 when a tornado crossed Interstate 30 and blew them off the highway.
Following the WFAA News 8 report "Night on the Bridge," a growing number of you on Facebook have voiced support for a memorial to the victims.
Even though nine people were killed, in a way, it's a tragedy that's been overlooked. I-30 reopened within hours, and attention quickly turned away from the highway and towards hundreds of people who'd lost their homes.
Cathy Tippet lost her daughter, Kim, and grandson, Kamryn, and said she strongly supports the idea of a memorial.
"Absolutely, I want to be a part of it," she said. "I mean, I would be honored. I would be so happy."
The director of Garland Park Department, Jermel Stevenson, said Thursday the city is interested in the idea, and will respond appropriately.
"That would be fitting, because that's what a portion of the public is asking for," Stevenson said. "It's not unheard for it to happen in a public space, such as a park or some other public venue. And to do it very tastefully."
