AUSTIN, Texas – Twenty Fort Hood soldiers left for West Africa Monday to help fight the Ebola epidemic.

The troops with the 1st Medical Brigade said goodbye to their families during a ceremony Monday morning

They will not have direct contact with patients, but will help with medical logistics and maintenance.

The troops had to quickly train for the sudden deployment, but many feel confident in their mission as they head out.

"We may not have all the answers but we're going over there to try to find out, try to do our best to ease the suffering," said Sgt. Tarah Young of the 583rd Medical Logistics Company.

Another 40 solders with the 1st Medical Brigade will deploy later this week, and are expected to stay around nine months.

When they return, all will go through a mandatory 21-day controlled monitoring period.
