Large fire burns under-construction apartment complex in Rockwall County

Texas Department of Transportation cameras at I-30 and Farm Road 551 in Fate showed a large, active fire that was burning what appeared to be a structure.

FATE, Texas — A large fire was burning off Interstate 30 in Rockwall County on Tuesday morning.

Texas Department of Transportation cameras at I-30 and Farm Road 551 in Fate showed a large, active fire that was burning what appeared to be a structure.

Fate city officials confirmed the burning structure was the Prose apartment complex that was under construction. Police said no one was living in the building. But officials confirmed evacuations were held in the Williamsburg area to the immediate west and south of the fire.

As firefighters battled the blaze, officials said a Fate DPS officer was treated for heat and dehydration. Officials said the officer rested and immediately returned to the scene.

By 7:30 a.m., the fire appeared to be contained, as mostly just white smoke was visible instead of flames.

Ground video shared with WFAA by a viewer showed heavy flames and smoke earlier in the morning. Watch here:

Fate city officials said four buildings were lost and two were damaged in the fire after it was deemed fully-contained. Also, one fire truck had minor cosmetic damage from the extreme heat at the scene.

No surrounding structures were affected by the fire, and officials said the afternoon rain should help extinguish the remaining smoldering lumber at the apartment complex.

At 12:15 p.m., officials said all evacuated residents have been allowed to return home.

City officials said a "huge multi-agency response was critical in ensuring the fire was contained and did not spread." Agencies that responded to the scene included: Fate DPS, Rockwall, Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office, Rockwall CERT, Royse City, Greenville, Heath, McLendon-Chisholm, Rowlett, Wylie, Cash, among others.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
