Family of five killed in head-on collision with FedEx truck in South Texas

The family was killed when a Ford box truck veered into the wrong side of the roadway along U.S. Highway 57, crashing head-on into their vehicle.

EAGLE PASS, Texas — A family of five is dead following a two-vehicle fatal crash in Maverick County on Tuesday night.

According to a statement from Texas Highway Patrol, the family of five were in a gray 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV traveling westbound on U.S. 57, nine miles east of Eagle Pass. That’s when a Ford FedEx box truck traveling eastbound failed to drive in a single lane, veering into the wrong side of the roadway, striking the Hyundai head-on.

The driver and all passengers of the Hyundai were pronounced dead at the scene. Texas DPS troopers are investigating the crash. 

The victims, all from Eagle Pass, were identified as Jose Martinez, 71, Noemi Jimenez Martinez, 61, Joanna Martinez, 34 and Samantha Martinez, 25. The youngest victim as 10 years old; she died as emergency crews were taking her to a nearby hospital. 

The driver of the box truck was injured and transported to the hospital. It's unknown as of now if they might face charges. 

"Our thoughts are with all of those involved in this tragic accident," FedEx said in a statement to KENS 5. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of loved ones. Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities at this time."
