Crystal Lagoon coming soon to Galveston County

It will be six times as big as the lagoon at Land Tejas' Balmoral community northeast of Houston and is set to be the largest in the state.

GALVESTON, Texas - Another manmade Crystal Lagoon is coming soon to Galveston County and it will be the biggest in Texas.

Houston-based developer Land Tejas Cos. announced plans for a 12-acre manmade Crystal Lagoon at its Texas City master-planned community Lago Mar.

It will be six times as big as the lagoon at Land Tejas’ Balmoral community northeast of Houston and is set to be the largest in the state.

The lagoon itself will be part of a 70-acre resort-style compound that will include a hotel, waterfront boardwalk promenade, 250,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space and possibly condos and townhomes, according to a press release. Construction will begin soon.

When Land Tejas unveiled its $13 million lagoon and amenity village at Balmoral in August, a consultant with the company told the Houston Business Journal that future lagoons could be closer to restaurants or hotels and offer a public entry point as well.

In 2017, Land Tejas bought the technology from Crystal Lagoons U.S. Corp. to create the first Crystal Lagoons in the Houston area. The developer has another lagoon planned for another development, though it hasn’t announced the location yet.

Unlike traditional swimming pools that use chlorine to treat water, Crystal Lagoons use special EPA-approved chemical diffusers, an ultrasonic filtration system and underwater vacuums to keep the water crystal clear.

Kevin Morgan, executive vice president of Crystal Lagoons U.S. Corp., previously told the HBJ that Texas "will be the largest market in the country" within the next three to five years.

Construction for the 12-acre lagoon will be financed through Land Tejas’ lending partner, Trez Capital. Land Tejas is working with Florida-based Heidt Design LLC; Houston-based KGA/Deforest Design LLC; engineering consultant Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc.; venue management company VenuWorks and Houston-based Jones Carter to develop plans for the lagoon.

The 2,033-acre community Lago Mar sits 14 miles north of Galveston. Eventually it will have 4,000 homes, priced from the $200,000s.
