Here are the best employers to work for in Texas, according to Forbes

Forbes and a research firm surveyed employees who work for companies with at least 500 people.

HOUSTON — Which is the best company to work for in Texas? Forbes and a research firm recently released the results of a survey ranking the best employers in every state.

They surveyed 160,000 employees who work for companies with at least 500 people. And when it comes to the best in Texas, a Houston-based healthcare provider tops the list.

Houston Methodist came in at No. 1 on the Forbes list of the best employers in the Lone Star State. The non-profit organization, which was founded in 1919, has seven hospitals and is led by its flagship institution, Houston Methodist Hospital.

According to Forbes, the healthcare provider employs more than 32,000 workers.

Another Texas-based favorite came in near top of the list.

H-E-B Grocery Company was ranked No. 3 in the state just behind Kentucky-based insurance company Humana. The regional supermarket chain with 340 stores was founded in 1905 and is owned by the Butt family.

The grocery chain, which is headquartered in San Antonio, employs more than 154,000 workers, according to Forbes.

Toyota North America, based in Plano, and Cook Children’s Health Care System, based in Fort Worth, round out the top 5.

A Houston favorite made the top 10 with NASA coming in at No. 8 on the list of best employers. 

Another Houston-based healthcare provider landed just outside of the top 10 with MD Anderson Cancer Center coming in at No. 11 on the list. They employ more than 24,000 workers.

Other notable employers who made the list include the Conroe Independent School District, which was ranked No. 13, and Houston Community College which came in at No. 24.

  3. H-E-B Grocery Company - retail and wholesale
  4. Toyota North America - automotive
  5. Cook Children's Health Care System - healthcare and social services
  6. Bechtel - construction, chemicals, and raw materials
  7. Progressive - insurance
  8. NASA - aerospace and defense
  9. IKEA - retails and wholesale
  10. Intel - semiconductors, electronics, and electrical engineering
