Texas patients impacted by nationwide drug shortage

Pain and sedation medications along with cancer chemotherapy drugs are among the hardest to find.

HOUSTON — Right now, there are more than 300 drugs in short supply across the United States.

The shortage is especially impacting families in Texas.

According to the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, some of the products in short supply are oxytocin, pain and sedation medication, cancer chemotherapy drugs and medications commonly found in hospital crash carts.

The hardest drug to find right now? It's Adderall, which is commonly used to treat ADHD.

Some Texas pharmacies said they're calling drug companies early in the morning to make sure they have drugs in stock, but they said patients don't have to panic just yet.

"Drug shortages, usually, in my experience, have lasted anywhere from a month or two months. In that time period, we would just try to switch them over to something different," pharmacist Armsih Patel said.

If your pharmacy is out of your medication, pharmacists said it's best to call around and ask for generic brands.
