AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has received more than $5 million so far from a settlement over a felled tree in 1984 that left the Republican gubernatorial candidate paralyzed.
Abbott s campaign Friday released the settlement, which currently pays his family about $14,400 a month. Abbott has been in public office since 1992 but has never disclosed the money made from the accident until now.
Abbott was a 26-year-old law student jogging in a Houston neighborhood when a tree fell on him. He lost use of both legs and has used a wheelchair ever since.
Abbott spokesman Matt Hirsch declined immediate comment on the statement s release.
The 55-year-old Abbott is considered the early favorite to replace Gov. Rick Perry in 2014.
