11-year-old Texas girl learning to fly with the help of her grandfather

Olivia can't get her full license until she's 17. Until then, she plans to keep flying so she's ready to fly solo.

TYLER, Texas — Olivia Herrera may just be a fifth-grader, but she's smart enough to fly a plane.

"I always wanted to fly because I thought it was really cool, like, being up in the air," she said.

At just 11 years old, Olivia is a fifth-grader at Overton Park Elementary in Fort Worth, but she likes to spend her time off learning to fly with her grandfather, Rex Johnson, who owns Johnson Aviation in Tyler, Texas.

She's been taking lessons for just under a year now.

"She's done great with me, she does really well handling the airplane," Rex said. "I was really impressed with what she does and how her ability is to fly an airplane."

Olivia can't get her full license until she's 17. Until then, she plans to keep flying so she's ready to fly solo.

She said her favorite part of flying is the view.

"Looking down at all the different things on the ground, just seeing like, all the fields and buildings," Olivia said.

She said she ultimately wants to own her own business and travel the world. She even has her grandfather's stamp of approval.

"It's the neatest to kind of help carry on a tradition and just, I'm excited for her to do that and hopefully she'll make a career out of it," Rex said.
