ANGLETON, Texas — Two police officers were awarded medals months after saving a woman from a burning car in Angleton.
On June 24, 2023, Cpl. Carlos Cobos and Officer Ramirez showed up at the crash scene along South Front Street just east of 288 and south of SH 35.
Cobos remembers when he and his trainee at the time realized they had to act quickly.
"I remember everything. It may sound cliché, but it was literally slow motion," Cobos said.
When they got there, they realized a woman was trapped inside the vehicle that had flipped on its roof.
Cobos got inside and cut the seatbelt and Ramirez helped him get the woman out and away from the flames.
Ramirez ended up becoming Cobos' partner.
Despite the recognition, Cobos said they were just doing their job. He said he wants to be an example for his kids and hopes other officers would do the same thing if it was someone in his family.
"That could have been my wife. That could have been my mom," Cobos said.
A couple of weeks after the rescue, Angleton City Council honored them with a lifesaver award, but that wasn't the end of their recognition.
On Feb. 10, Cobos and Ramirez were given the Medal of Heroism by the Sons of the American Revolution Texas Chapter #33.
"We are proud of the courage, professionalism, and precision these officers displayed during a high-risk/stressful situation. This is a testament to the Angleton Police Department Mission to protect lives," Angleton PD said in a social media post.
The officers and the woman they saved haven't been reunited, although Cobos said he's open to the idea. For now, he had this message.
"I'm glad I was able to be there for her ... given an opportunity, you know, to live, you know, we have to roll with it. And thank God for another opportunity to live," Cobos said.
The police department also released bodycam video of the incident. Watch it below.
