Child killed in motorbike crash identified

Friends and family are mourning the loss of an 11-year-old boy after he accidentally drove his motorbike into a brick mailbox Tuesday night.

ARLINGTON — Friends and family are mourning the loss of an 11-year-old boy after he accidentally drove his motorbike into a brick mailbox Tuesday night.

The boy was identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office Wednesday as Demarion Levi.

The accident happened at about 7:15 p.m. on McQueary Street near Fielder Road. Police are still investigating what caused Levi to lose control and whether he was wearing a helmet.

The mailbox was split in two by the force of the collision.

"This is just a tragedy," said Lt. Chris Cook, a spokesman with Arlington police. "His parents are at the hospital."

Cook said the motorbike wasn't street legal.

Neighbors said Levi lives in the area and that the street was packed with other children and families playing during the warm evening. Later that evening, many of them lit candles and held a brief prayer vigil.

A young girl was also taken to the hospital with a leg injury, but police haven't confirmed her role in the crash.

Police are conducting a forensic crash investigation.
