WALLER COUNTY, Texas -- A small group of activists and Sandra Bland supporters gathered to call on the federal government and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to bring justice to Bland's case.
They are protesting the grand jury's decision not to indict anyone at the Waller County Jail where Bland died in custody.
A medical examiner ruled her death a suicide, saying she hanged herself in her cell. Protesters are calling for the dismantlement of the grand jury and the arrest of Officer Encenia, the DPS trooper who made the traffic stop that led to Bland's arrest.
It is possible Encenia could face charges. We'll find out if that happens when the grand jury meets again next month. For now, this group says it stands with the Bland family and that it's disgusted with yesterday's grand jury decision.
"Their decision basically says that if indeed Sandra Bland was murdered, nobody would be held responsible or accountable," said activist Deric Muhammad. "This is why you have a movement in America called Black Lives Matter, and right now, there is a crisis going on in this nation."
A second protest was held in Hermann Park on Tuesday evening.
