SPRING, Texas — Investigators with the Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office say an elderly woman in Spring died Wednesday when her home caught fire.
A 911 caller reported smoke coming from the home on Loddington Street in the Fox Run neighborhood. The caller said a woman who lived alone in the house might be trapped inside.
South Montgomery County firefighters found the victim unconscious and lying on a bathroom floor. They pulled her from the burning home and tried to revive her but the victim died from smoke inhalation.
The fire was confined to the living room but it caused extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the home.
MCFMO investigators determined the fire started on a couch and filled the house with toxic smoke.
The victim's name has not been released.
Senior citizens, especially those living alone, are up to four times more likely to die in a home fire than the average adult," MCFMO said.
They also urged everyone to make sure their homes have working smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway. MCFMO said the vast majority of fire deaths occur in homes that do not have working smoke alarms.
Montgomery County residents who need assistance with their smoke alarms can contact their local fire station or call the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office at (936) 538-8288.
