Two firefighters hurt battling fire at Spring storage facility

At the fire's peak, officials said they had more than 100 personnel responding to this fire.

SPRING, Texas — Firefighters battled a five-alarm fire at a self-storage facility in the Spring area early Thursday.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the fire, including a sprained ankle and slight burns on their hands.

The first set of crews responded just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. This happened on Sawdust Road just west of the North Freeway.

“The outdoor temperature is good for these guys to get out and cool off,” Jason Milsaps, Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management, said. “The interior temperature is high so there’s a lot of swapping of crews quite frequently to allow them to come back and rehab, hydrate, take on some snacks and wait for their next assignment. And they’re going to do that throughout the night.”

At its peak, officials said they had more than 100 personnel responding to the fire.

People with storage units at the facility were left anxious, unable to check on the status of their belongings.

"They're saying two-thirds of the building is affected," one person said. "Even if it's not affected by fire, everything is affected by either water or smoke damage."

Melanie Johnson said some of the items she was storing at the facility include belongings from loved ones who passed away.

"Now, I just don't know what'll happen to them or how they'll be when I go back in there.

Fire officials told her it will take several days before she and others will be able to return to examine the damage for themselves.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
