ID=15874507HOUSTON -- Police and rescuers are searching for a driver after a vehicle went into a water-filled Sims Bayou late Thursday.

It happened shortly before midnight near the Gulf Freeway.

Police arrived to find the tracks of the vehicle in the grass, but neither the vehicle nor the driver could be found.

A witness that lives nearby told officers he saw the vehicle swerve off the road, jump the curb, and go through the grass -- missing nearby utility poles before plunging into the water.

Houston police believe the vehicle, possibly a Dodge Charger, may have been stolen earlier in the day. Police said the area is a popular dumping ground for car thieves.

A witness said it appeared someone was driving the vehicle when it went into the water, however.

The search was called off around 6 a.m. as heavy rain moved in. The search will resume sometime over the weekend, police said.
