HOUSTON — Six Spring Branch ISD students were on board a school bus when it overturned in a crash Thursday afternoon.
It happened along Silber Road just north of I-10 and just west of The Loop.
The students were between the ages of 11 and 17, according to police. The school district said out of the six students and the bus driver on board, one student appears to have suffered a minor wrist injury.
Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Larry Baimbridge said it happened around 3:50 p.m. while the bus was eastbound on Westview Drive. He said as it passed through the intersection of Silber, it was hit by a speeding car that was southbound.
Baimbridge said the bus took out a light pole, hit a curb and flipped on its side.
No kids were ejected and they were able to get out of the bus through the rear emergency door.
The bus is equipped with seatbelts but it's unclear if the students were using them at the time of the crash.
The driver of the car was also taken to an area hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown.
Crews were seen picking up broken glass off the street and there was heavy damage seen on the right side of the school bus, including dents and broken windows. The door also appeared to have been detached.
The student said the bus had just left Academy of Choice when it was hit by the car.
"A car was passing a red light and hit the end of the bus where my friend and I were sitting. It all happened, like, so slow. My friend, she had fallen on top of me ... it was just crazy," the student said.
Parents were seen running toward the crash scene to check on their kids.
Here's a statement sent by Spring Branch ISD:
"Spring Branch ISD is grateful that the six students and driver on Bus 19 who were involved in an accident near Silber and Westview are safely off the bus and being checked out by EMS personnel at the scene. At this time, we believe one student may have sustained an injury to their wrist."
