SAN ANTONIO — Six children were hospitalized with "very life-threatening injuries" after being ejected from a car traveling on Interstate 35 before its tire blew out and it crashed into a tree, San Antonio authorities say. Their ages range from 2 to 11 years old.
It isn't believed the six young victims thrown from the vehicle Sunday evening were wearing their seat belts, according to Officer Nick Soliz, a spokesperson for the San Antonio Police Department. Two adults in the car were also taken to a local hospital, as well as a seventh child who police say was secure in the vehicle and wasn't ejected.
The driver is now facing several charges of endangering a child.
There were nine people total traveling in what police believed to be a mid-2000s SUV before the single-car crash in the area of I-35 and Frost Bank Center Drive around 7:15 p.m.
Soliz said Northbound I-35 stretching from Walters to Frost Bank Center Drive would be shut down "for the foreseeable future" as police investigate the scene, adding that early information provided by authorities could change.
The victims haven't been identified.
