TRA: Lake Livingston Dam repairs completed over a week after potential failure watch was issued

Repairs were initially slated to be completed Monday, July 8. Repairs were completed and tested Sunday, July 7, before Hurricane Beryl made landfall.

LIVINGSTON, Texas — Lake Livingston Dam repairs are now complete as of Sunday, according to the Trinity River Authority.

The repairs were initially slated to be completed Monday, July 8. Repairs were completed and tested on Sunday, July 7, before Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Southeast Texas.

This comes after officials issued a "potential failure watch" for the dam.

KHOU 11 News obtained a report that detailed why the watch was issued. It showed that on May 16, the day the deadly derecho storm hit Southeast Texas, the Trinity River Authority discovered a partial failure on the left wing of the dam -- a wall that helps guide the flow of water downstream.

During inspections on June 26, they also found damage to the stilling basin, an area downstream of the dam that reduces the speed of water.

In an update Monday, officials said the completed repairs helped ensure the dam was ready for rainfall from Hurricane Beryl. So far, they said four to five inches of rain fell in the area.

If additional rain related to the storm falls, the dam should perform as designed and handle it without impacting the integrity of the dam, according to the officials.

Ten of the 12 dam gates are in full operation. The two gates that are not in operation are slated to be back online in the fall.
