Woman in crosswalk hit, killed by METRO bus in downtown Houston, police say

Houston police said the woman was in the crosswalk and had the walk signal and the bus driver should have yielded.

HOUSTON — A woman was hit and killed by a METRO bus Friday morning, police said.

The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. in downtown Houston at the intersection of Rusk at Smith.

Investigators said the bus was in the turning lane on Smith Street headed toward Rusk. When the light turned green the bus driver, who is a contract worker for First Transit, proceeded to turn and hit and killed the woman who was crossing the street inside the crosswalk. METRO police said the woman had the walk signal and the driver should have yielded.

Two passengers who were on the bus were not injured.

Police said it was raining at the time of the crash but it's unknown if weather was a factor in the woman's death.

The bus driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, investigators said. The district attorney's office will determine if charges will be filed.
