KATY, Texas — Barbershops are often a cornerstone of a community and one Katy shop is taking advantage of that: uplifting the community one buzzcut, and one book, at a time.
In the corner of H.D. Tonsorium is a small library featuring more than two dozen children's books.
"They come in every week, and sometimes they don't need a haircut -- they just come in and get the books," barbershop owner Kevin Neal said.
Kids are not only encouraged to read while they wait for a haircut but they are also allowed to take the books home with them if they want.
The literacy corner was set up and run by Alpha Alpha Eta Omega members -- the graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority -- in northwest Harris County.
Anjelia Daniel leads the program and said it's just one of many efforts to increase literacy and book ownership in the area.
"It is great to have your own books -- books that reflect you, that reflect your stories," Daniel said.
The organization runs and stocks two barbershop libraries, two "Little Free Libraries" and also hosts community book fairs.
