OAK RIDGE NORTH, Texas — Students at Oak Ridge High School have their sights set on a world record, but it might not be one that you would think of off the top of your head.
They're attempting to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the world's biggest mum.
Several classes have been working on the project.
So, how big is the mum?
"It's a mum that's 25 feet in diameter with ribbons over 150 feet long," teacher Ashley Wilson said.
It's so big that it will have to be lifted by a crane.
"I heard and I thought they were crazy," student Heston Turner said.
Although it was a pretty insane idea, a floral décor class and a welding class, along with others, jumped on board to help.
They drafted a plan the community stepped up with donations for the material needed to make the mum, the flatbed to transport it as well as the crane to lift it. They're also helping to make the 5,000 flowers that will go on the mum.
"I had my own family, my mom, my mother-in-law, aunts and uncle donated towards it. They made well over 3,000 flowers just alone at home helping out. Just because we knew it wasn’t a project that we could do alone just with the kids," Wilson said.
"It's a big group effort ... the community and the students," welding teacher Dennis Hom said.
The mum consists of two pieces so big that they'll be hauled in a flatbed trailer and a crane will have to lift them up in the air. It's made of flat bar, 1x1 tubing, table cloths and lots of chicken wire. A land surveyor will measure it to see if it breaks the record.
The biggest mum so far is believed to have been made in the Dallas area and is about 290 square feet. The Oak Ridge students think their mum will be much larger. They think it'll be between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet.
The mum will be revealed at Woodforest Stadium on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.
