HPD: Student shot near north Houston high school

Police said one person was detained but they were still looking for another. They also said there was no threat to the community.

HOUSTON — A student was injured and one person detained after a shooting near a high school north of downtown Houston, according to police.

Police said the 16-year-old was shot during a fight near the Northside High School campus.

According to HPD Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite, just before 1 p.m., two officers who were patrolling the area heard gunshots. They saw three people on the sidewalk along Fulton near the school.

The 16-year-old who was shot was down on the sidewalk. He was hit in the arm and one of the officers performed first aid on him before he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Police said his injury was not life-threatening.

Satterwhite said the two others took off in different directions on Fulton. One ran north and the other ran south. The second officer ran after the teen who was running south and caught him in a nearby neighborhood. He told police he was also a student, but at a different high school.

Police said they found the gun used in the shooting. It's not clear at this point, who did the shooting.

Northside High School was first placed on lockdown and then secure mode while police investigated. Nearby Marshall Middle School and Ketelsen Elementary School were also in secure mode.

Police even though the other person who was at the scene hasn't been found, there's no active threat to the public or to nearby schools.

Here's the update police provided at the scene:

Because the shooting happened off school property, the Houston Police Department is leading the investigation.

The high school issued this statement after the shooting:

"A student was injured in an incident involving a gun outside Northside High School this afternoon and is receiving treatment. Police are investigating the incident. The school was temporarily on lockdown. It is now in secure mode. Students and staff in the building are safe. Their safety and wellbeing is our top priority. We are making arrangements to have additional counselors at the school this afternoon. Marshall Middle School and Ketelsen Elementary School are also in secure mode this afternoon because of police activity in the area. Students and staff at those schools are safe."
