HOUSTON — Community members said light rain flooded ditches on Friday, and with so much new construction, the water doesn't move like it used to.
They said there's a never-ending fear of what the next rain brings.
The water-swollen ditches in Acres Homes are an unfortunate, but regular, part of the scenery. And it's just about too much to take.
"You get knocked down ... try to get up and you keep getting knocked down and so it's like that's what happens when the storms come through?" Daryle J. said.
Daryle and Keith Johnson's family home was damaged during the May derecho and Hurricane Beryl.
And the storms haven't let up since then.
"It's like you get past one storm and there's another one coming. You don't know how long it's going to hold up,” Johnson said.
The storm debris remains piled along the road, choking the ditches and often leaving the streets flooding and ground saturated.
It has even impacted the home's foundation -- forcing it to shift. And now, adding insult to injury, they need to patch a hole in the roof.
“Debris hit the top of the roof and put a hole in the roof. So, it's like the ceiling can cave in at any minute," Daryle said.
On Friday, they said FEMA did another walk-through. They said they've been denied assistance before and fear a repeat. They also said the new construction nearby doesn't help the never-ending concern.
“The water doesn't move how it used to move,” Daryle said.
So, once this dries out, they'll cross their fingers waiting on what the next storm brings.
