Young Montgomery County couple’s love tested by tragedy weeks into marriage

Tanner and Kaylie Tomczak got married on Oct. 13. Six weeks later, Tanner suffered critical injuries during a Friendsgiving dinner.

CONROE, Texas — A young couple in Montgomery County is facing a life-changing challenge just weeks after their wedding. The newlywed husband was nearly killed after an ATV accident just before Thanksgiving.

Tanner and Kaylie Tomczak have spent the last eight days in the hospital together. They are going through one of the toughest parts of their marriage -- just six weeks into it.

"We got married in October, October 13th, and just bought our first house as well," said Kaylie.

The newlyweds were intent on making beautiful new memories this holiday season and hosted Friendsgiving on Nov. 23.

"Halfway through my buddies went outside and we took turns riding the 4-wheeler harmlessly down the street," said Tanner. "I hit a bump going too fast. I flipped the 4-wheeler and it landed on me."

Kaylie rushed outside.

"All I saw was him lying on the ground," said Kaylie. "He was in a lot of pain."

They've been at HCA Houston in Conroe ever since. The injuries are severe -- multiple fractures to his pelvis, a snapped collarbone, and a fractured tailbone. His pelvis is held together by a metal bar for now.

"It's a lot of pain I wouldn't wish this pain on anybody," said Tanner. "It's mentally tough just as much as it is physically. A lot of people that injure their pelvis don't end up walking again."

Doctors say Tanner will, but the road to recovery will be long. Kaylie's been right by his side.

"He's been my best friend the whole time," said Kaylie. "But to see him go through it has been hard. It's been a struggle, but we're glad we have each other. I've been here every night, so I'll still stay here."

The newlyweds learned early on the reality of "in sickness and in health." A devoted couple is showing true love.

"I wouldn't want to have anyone else in this room besides her," Tanner said.

Tanner will be out of work for several months, if you'd like to help the family with mounting medical expenses, you can donate on their GoFundMe page here. As of Monday night, they were only at 31% of their goal.
